Common Threads will be a weekly feature where mom and I will be showing you how a mother-daughter pair who stylistically, could not be more different, can share a wardrobe. We will be selecting one item, and then styling them with pieces from our individual closets. We may dress differently, but we have a common thread.
This week Mom and I found an amazing cable-knit skirt at Winners. We decided that it would be the perfect piece to start our feature – Common Threads. Mom was instantly enthralled by the possibilities, while I couldn’t quite put my finger on why it bugged me…
SO it was definitely a bargain at – $39.00 and it screams fall through-and-through. It can easily be paired with opaque tights, a blazer, a jewel-toned cardigan, or other things you probably already own. It makes a very on-trend addition to your fall/winter wardrobe but be careful that you don’t get too close to girly-girl when accessorizing. I wasn’t surprised when mom and I both chose an edgier approach to styling this cable-knit skirt.
Since this is really a piece that mom loves, let’s start with her outfit:
When I put myself together in the morning I generally start with one piece that I really love and then build on it. I often find these special pieces on sale because deeply discounted shopping is one of my hobbies! As you can imagine though the “sell off” aspect of discount shopping makes it hard to have current links. I’m sorry about that. When that happens I’ll just choose a piece that has a similar feel to the one I bought pictured in the blog post. For example the Moto Jacket in the photo was purchased at Tilley Endurables last spring so its no longer available on-line, but the same look can be had from this Ralph Lauren Moto Jacket available now at the Bay. The Cable Knit Skirt is the one we purchased at Winners. Finally I plan to wear my Arche boots (deeply discounted, bought while on vacation). But… if I were starting over I would buy these navy blue buckskin Trippen boots instead…BTW I have a birthday coming up.
When I do decide to put effort into my appearance, I’m all about layering unexpected pieces together. This Awards Jacket from Roots is a prime example, because it’s kind of edgy, but the cut is really flattering and feminine. I also love wearing entirely black outfits, so this just made sense to me. Throw on a matte red lip and some incredible booties, and you’re set. This would also look kick ass with some opaque black tights if it was a bit cooler outside!
